Tower Hill Underground Station

I used Tower Hill quite a lot on a recent stay to London, the location is great as it is close to the Tower of London as well as Tower Gateway for the DLR and multiple buses and hotels, including the excellent Doubletree by Hilton London - Tower of London, where I was staying on a recent trip to London. It is also the main Underground station serving London Fenchurch Street.

The entrance to Tower Hill station is a few metres from one of the largest remaining segments of the Roman London Wall which once surrounded the historic City of London, there are actually two entrances for Eastbound and Westbound, it's a shame it isn't interlinked but it signed out well to know where to go.

The station is step-free, and there aren't as many lifts as there is at other stations, there's a ramp going down and then one lift to the platform, compared to two or three at other larger and more awkward stations.

It is on the District and Circle lines, meaning it isn't too far away from Westminster where you can connect to the Jubilee line, but services from here also run to the likes of Victoria and Embankment. It would have been nice to perhaps see it connected on more lines, as most places I wanted to get to, I did have to make at least one change, but still the lines they're currently on is okay.

Staff at the station is a good sign - but the staff were mixed, some were more helpful and friendly than others; some just didn't appear to care.

No shops or toilets inside the station, but this is typical of a tube station.

It isn't the largest nor most modern station on the network, but it's an average tube station and does the job, and really did make the difference for my hotel stay, providing easy access for me into central London.

3* - Improving the platforms or perhaps ensuring consistently high-quality service would be the next improvement.

At the southeast "corner" of the Circle/District Line, Tower Hill is in Travelcard Zone 1. It's just across the Thames from the famous Tower of London and one of the oldest remaining sections of the original Wall is just outside. It's a relatively modern Tube station, as it was remodeled a couple of years ago. Still, there is no step-free access here.

Note that the Underground map shows Tower Hill and Tower Gateway as connected, you must go outside and cross the street to access it. Apparently, as long as you do so within 20 minutes there is no additional charge for Oyster Card users.

This is the last stop before the Circle Line splits from the District. Tower Hill is between Monument and Aldgate on the Circle, between Monument and Aldgate East on the District.

I got to know Tower Hill Underground station quite well when My Yelp Elite friend Lorrie M was visiting from San Francisco. It is the Tube station serving some of London's best known tourist attractions - the Tower of London and Tower Bridge

The station is served by the Circle (sadly no longer a circle these days) and District lines. To access the DLR lines, you have to leave this station although the Tube map shows them as being interconnected

Lorrie is a keen photographer and our many journeys enabled her to get some stunning shots of Tower Bridge at different times of day. It was never over crowded in the station and the trains ran punctually

Tower Hill is a key junction on the London Underground network, on the District and Circle Lines, and is one of the stations most used by tourists, being right next to the Tower of London. It also serves as the nearest tube to Fenchurch Street National Rail station, as well as being less than five minutes from Tower Gateway station on the Docklands Light Railway network. It is in Zone 1.


The station opened (slightly further west of the present location) The present station was opened as 'Tower of London' station in 1882, when the Metropolitan Line opened a branch from Minories junction to the east. In 1884 this strecth of line was incorporated into the District Line when it was extended eastwards from Mansion House to Whitechapel. At the same time the station was moved further west, and renamed 'Mark Lane'. It was renamed in 1946 as Tower Hill. In 1967 the present station was built as part of the general redevelopment of the area and to provide more facilities. The station is currently undergoing refurbishment, having got rather tatty.


The station is served by both District and Circle Lines, on three platforms: eastbound trains towards Upminster (District) and Aldgate (Circle) use platform 1; platform 2 is for terminating District Line trains from the west, which then return to Wimbledon; and platform 3 is used for all other westbound trains.


The basic off-peak service pattern provides 12 trains an hour eastbound to Upminster (some of which terminate short at Dagenham or Barking in the peaks); and 6 trains an hour in either direction on the the Circle, and 6 per hour to Wimbledon, Ealing Broadway and Richmond, with 6 trains an hour terminating from the west.


The exits and entrances are separate above ground, which often confuses tourists, as does the presence of a terminating platform. (An indicator helpfully tells you which platform has the next westbound departure, but tourists seem happily to ignore this, sitting in the train which has just terminated while other trains trundle by


For the DLR station, turn left after the barriers and left out of the exit; follow the footpath more or less straight ahead, then Tower Gateway is on your left in Minories. For Fenchurch Street station, walk straight ahead through the barriers and turn right out of the exit: there is a back entrance to Fenchurch Street, next to the railway bridge over Cooper's Row, literally two minutes' walk away. On the way, look right through the car park entrance to the hotel on your right: here is one of the largest remaining fragments of London's City Wall.

Perhaps one of the better stations for locals and visitors alike? It serves Circle and District lines in a way you can spear out to almost any part of the city. If you're seeing the London Tower or Tower Bridge it's conveniently on the north end there for you to pop in and out

London Underground as Usual is by far one of the cleanest underground system in the world! For the most part, most stations have escalators and main stations have handicap access. Tower Hill is a great stop!

Tower Hill tube station has a really annoying layout that encourages a one-way entry and exit. The exit takes you to a different place where you can't even see the entrance, and it would be much better if they had entry and exit on both sides instead.

There are also no escalators. How am I supposed to develop into an obese waddling carcass of a person if I am constantly having to go up and down stairs all the time?

Why do you have to go up the stairs to then enter the underground and go back down? Shakes head. Virgin wifi here.

Yeah, it's a Tube station. Okay. On the District and Circle Lines. Convenient for the Tower of London. Teems with people during morning & evening commuter rushes and with tourists during the summer and peak tourism times of the year. Interesting place to watch City workers doing the daily shuffle with tourists from across the globe just trying to figure out where in the heck they are.

It is on the Circle Line between Monument and Aldgate, and the District Line between Monument and Aldgate East. It is a few metres to Tower Gateway DLR station and Fenchurch Street railway station. The station is currently undergoing much delayed refurbishment with completion now due sometime in 2008.
